Nomads
Dazzled by the light.
On a glorious
late summer afternoon Wall defeated Lichfield Nomads by 121 runs.
Wall won the
toss and elected to bat. A strong batting line up shrugged off being 1-1 and
added a century for the second wicket. The Nomads bowlers were all guilty of the
occasional bad ball but the fielding was the biggest problem, with boundaries
being conceded unnecessarily. A pep talk from Moss at the drinks break improved
things as Moss, Greaves and Fearon all held good catches but each wicket brought
another confident batsman to the crease. The match saw a welcome return to old
Nomad Darren (Daz) Cartwright. Who blew away the cobwebs with a decent 8 over
spell and a couple of wickets after a gap of 11 years. Nomads battled manfully,
chipping away at the Wall wickets and a likely 300+ was restricted to 270ish.
The Nomads
got off to a steady start as it was pointless to throw away our wickets and the
target seemed nigh on ungettable with the state of the wicket and the late
evening glare making batting difficult. There were useful contributions from all
the top order. Gardner scored 17, Stanley 18, Jones 24, Moss 22 and Rolfe scored
21 to pass 200 runs for the season. Scott 10, Fearon 2*, Cartwright 1* all
avoided the dreaded Gonad but Hughes and Weir were not so lucky. The final 20
overs were all bowled from the far end as the low sunlight was getting almost
dangerous.
The
opposition won at a canter and were quizzing us in The Bell about Chris Collins
who had twice been their nemesis in previous years but there were no such
batting heroics from the Nomads today.
