Stone SP (Swynnerton) v Lichfield Nomads

Stone SP 173 for 7
Lichfield Nomads 145
Stone SP won by 28 runs

Nomads arrived at the lovely Stone CC ground with a team of home half the players were over 60 to find an opposition team Of whom half appeared to be under 16. Nomads lost the toss and were sent out to field. Hoddy and Heslington opened and Hoddy claimed an early wicket when Hawbrook, who had apparently been celebrating his side’s League achievements until the early hours, swiped at a wide “loosener” and was caught well by Page at point. Hughes came on for Heslington after his 4th over and the scoring was kept down although no more wickets fell until 81 was reached. Forster replaced Hoddy and he bowled with equal frugality. Hoddy, Hughes and Forster had very similar figures all going for little over 3 per over. Eight overs were needed from our less regular bowlers and although bowling well Blackburn, P and Cartwight were given more stick by the batters who were attempting to up the run-rate. Heslington bowled out his last overs at the end, unusually for him being the only bowler not to claim a wicket.

Nomads again stick to their task well and a target of 174 seemed not unreasonable.

Gardner and Stanley opened but had trouble scoring against Shearing in particular and the required rate soon increased to 5/over. Gardner was out for only 10 when attempting to force the pace. Gardner being out early never bodes well for the Nomads but Rolfe came in after Page had gone and forced his partner Stanley into some quick running. Hughes came in but never looked comfortable and nobody could really stick with Rolfe to help him out. Cartwright was run out, Rolfe having forgot about his recent hip operation and was eventually out himself having achieved his first Nomad half century. The required rate was up to 8/over and whilst Hoddy hit a couple of boundaries the target never seemed achievable and Nomads were all out with an over to spare.

The extra runs saved by Swynnerton’s youthful fielders were decisive in costing Nomads the victory
