Result: Whittington won by 7 wickets

Nomads lose last match of the season.

On a glorious late summer afternoon Whittington defeated Lichfield Nomads by 7 wickets.

Nomads batted first and Gardner and Heslington opened the batting. The first ball went for a wide and the second was a full toss that Gardner top edged for an easy catch at fine leg. The bowling began erratically and the extras were totting up nicely. Fearon scored his first runs with a lusty blow that just cleared the cover fielder. If he had been taller, Scott would have escaped the dreaded Gonad trophy at the 11th hour. With the score on 35,  Fearon was bowled by an inswinging yorker, off the first ball of the 7th over. Moss kept the scoreboard ticking over with some fluent strokeplay and was bowled by Boden for 28 trying to force the pace. Rolfe scampered some useful late innings runs and a couple of profitable overs off young Able boosted the rate. Rolfe was run out trying to take a risky run and there was just time for Scott to get off the mark and then hit a sweet straight six. Heslington carried his bat for a hard earned 61 not out. Whilst the Nomads would have liked 170/180 it was still a decent total to defend off 35 overs.

Bliss and Walker batted confidently and put on a match winning opening stand of 88. Hoddy bowled Bliss as he tried to go for it after reaching his fifty. Greaves tempted Martin into a lofted drive and Moss took a good catch on the long off boundary. Fearon then removed Gray caught behind by Rolfe. The Nomads were back in the game at 103 for 3, the hosts still needed four an over. Would they buckle under the pressure or bat sensibly and reach their target? Unfortunately for the Nomads it was the latter. Nomads fielding was untidy and too many runs were leaked unnecessarily. With the scores level, Pinfield bowled the final over and his first ball was misfielded and the batsmen jogged through for the winning run.

Champagne moments: Mark’s half century, Tom’s 6, Dan’s catch on the boundary and Hoddy’s diving stop at square leg.
