Nomads run Duke of York close

An entertaining contest saw the Duke of York side run out close winners after a spirited batting and bowling performance by the Nomads.

Duke of York batted first on a pleasant late spring evening. A confident opening partnership couldn’t be broken and both batsmen retired not out when they reached fifty in line with the prior arrangements. Neither player looked in much trouble but rarely dominated the bowlers as the scoreboard ticked over at 6/7 runs an over. Fearon bagged the only wicket, bowling Crooke in the last of the 20 overs. All the bowlers did well to restrict the opposition to 142.

Stanley and Scott started in circumspect fashion against tight bowling. They scampered some quick singles before Stanley was run out trying to up the run rate. Scott was bowled and Fearon hit a useful cameo including a four along the ground through the covers and a straight drive that bounced just short of the long on boundary before falling on his sword to a straight one. Brannigan and George put on a vital 47 as the Nomads kept in the game. Brannigan was particularly bullish and hit  three 6’s. George was caught twice. The first one not counting as the young fielder stepped over the rope taking the catch. Rolfe kept the momentum going but the mockers were put on Brannigan as the opposition asked for his score knowing he was approaching 50 and fearing he could win the game on his own. On finding out he had 43, he duly scored a single and then skied one that was well caught at mid off. Pinfield rolled back the years with some clever batting to keep everyone interested and 10 were needed off the final two balls. With the fielders all out on the boundary it was impossible to find a gap and the home side triumphed by 7 runs. A good evening’s entertainment played in a fine spirit and a more competitive performance than last season when we failed to bat out the 20 overs.
Pedants corner. It was agreed that batsmen should retire at 50 and no balls/wides would count as 2 runs but no extra ball.
