Nomads winning position spurned.

A disappointing defeat on a miserable cold, dank June afternoon. The Nomads worked hard in the field to restrict the hosts to just 146 off their 40 overs but the target of just 3.7 an over proved too much. A painfully slow start and middle order failures meant that the Nomads only scored 130 runs for 7 and they lost by 16 runs.

Captain Moss inserted the opposition in the expectation of a drying wicket based on the forecast. The dry overcast skies at the start soon turned into varying degrees of light/heavy drizzle. Never nearly enough to cause a dash for the pavilion but thoroughly miserable none the less. The Preece brothers batted patiently and eked out an opening stand of 81 before there was a steady trickle of wickets. Moss picked up three and there was one each for Heslington, Fearon and Hoddy. Vale on debut bowled a controlled eight overs and could have had a wicket himself as a skied effort just evaded the advancing Hoddy. He also took a superb running catch at long on. Walsall Health reached 146 for 7 by the 40th over.
The Nomads took the field in optimistic mood and Gardner and Stanley battled manfully in an effort to make inroads in to the meagre target. Stanley was deliberately dropped by the keeper before being run out trying to force the pace. The partnership added 39 runs. Gardner was finally out caught for a vital 33. George and Rolfe added a useful partnership before George was caught. With 74 needed off the last 15 overs and wickets in hand, there was always a chance that the Nomads could snatch victory but credit to the Walsall Health bowlers who stuck to their task and restricted the scoring opportunities. Moss was caught miscuing a short ball and Fearon played across a straight one trying to hit out. Vale played some positive shots but when he was out for 24, the game was up and the hosts won by 16 runs.
