Nomads target proves too much.

Having already lost their opening tour match on the Saturday due to a lack of opposing players, Nomads went into their second and final fixture against St Barnabus hoping to save what wicket keeper Dave Rolfe termed “The Doomed Too-er!”.

Barney’s won the toss, electing to bat and quirkily piped their openers Goldring and Williamson to the crease to the tune of “When the Saints go Marching in” in fair conditions with the field and wicket looking in splendid nick.

Their partnership was relatively short-lived; Goldring being caught well by Moss off the bowling of Westwood with the score at 29. Male entered the fray and set about building a hefty partnership with the remaining Williamson with the weather ominously beginning to turn, covers having to be brought swiftly on and off several times. The heavens really opened soon after and a lengthy delay put the game in doubt. Mercifully though, the rains eventually stopped and the inadequate covering of the pitch meant some areas remained dry whilst others were sodden, drastically affecting the bounce. Wickets duly began to tumble, in what was now a game reduced to 30 overs due to the loss of roughly an hour’s play. Williamson was the next to fall to a brilliant diving catch from George off Hughes’ bowling with the score at 84/2. Nomads missed one or two chances for wickets with an unlucky drop from Rolfe behind the sticks and a comedy collision between Westwood and George, both attempting to claim a dolly catch. St Barnabus however lost their next 4 wickets for just 20 runs with Hughes claiming 2, Heslington 1 and Chris Ball with the champagne moment of the innings, narrowly missing a caught-and-bowled opportunity but showing quick thinking and agility to claim the wicket of Lewis with a direct-hit runout. The last wicket stand between Higginson, who was eventually bowled with a Ball jaffer, and D. Male, who ended not-out on 52, left Nomads chasing a score of 137 to win, respectable given the staggered game and poor conditions.

Nomads’ innings began with the dismissal of Moss on only the second ball, misreading the uneven bounce which had undone the St Barnabus rearguard, to loop a simple catch to the fielder. Ball came in, sunhat and all, to support Heslington but both struggled to push the score along; Ball eventually being bowled by Goldring for 7, the scoreboard reading just 35/2 off 13 overs. George came to the crease and the rate began to steadily rise, playing some classy strokes but ultimately failing to find the boundary more often than not due to the sticky outfield, which was now beginning to dry out, and the impressive St Barnabus fielding display. He and Heslington pushed the singles hard before the latter fell to an excellent ball from Goldring which deviated off the pitch slightly to send his off bail flying. With Nomads still very much in the fight, the decision was made to push Stanley and Pickering down the order in favour of some heartier firepower which came in the form of Rolfe. He and George continued to push the singles into the few gaps, occasionally snarling at each other as the pressure to score continued to mount. George’s innings came to an end on 31 when the bounce again deceived him and he was caught by Male junior in a similar fashion to Moss earlier on. Dan Brannigan, who had bowled tightly and was rather unfortunate not to have taken a wicket, came in to see the win home with some characteristic swashbuckling shots to all corners of the ground; he and Rolfe finishing on 34 and 35 not out respectively.
