See-saw
Match goes to Strikers
Nomads turned up to face a 10-man Strikers side on a hot sunny summer’s day.
After electing to bat the fall of Gardner for a rare gonad was an early setback.
However Weir and George settled in setting a good pace off the early overs.
However we know from experience that Strikers usually save their better bowlers,
and batsmen, for later. Consequently the introduction of Jay and Dhiraj slowed
things down. Weir was bowled hitting out and Rolfe was soon given out lbw
although on reflection perhaps the ball had pitched outside leg-stump. Moss
contributed 24 but was never happy on the surface. Meanwhile George was looking
fluent but had a rush of blood which prompted him to charge down the wicket,
only to miss and be stumped. Wickets then fell quickly, Stanley lbw, Blackburn
to a really good catch, Brannigan failed to clear the fielder at deep mid-on and
Pickering caught behind. Westwood and Hoddy eked out a few extra runs before
Westwood was bowled trying to hit out. A score of only 166 was not likely to be
enough against even a 10 man side.
Brannigan and Moss were both punished in their first overs but sharpened up,
both taking wickets in their second overs. Nomads were doing well enough until
Jyothi came in and started hitting the ball lustily. Although his strokes were
mainly limited to a slog/sweep, he rode his luck and pushed up the runrate to
what was required. He eventually edged one to Blackburn to give Nomads a glimmer
of hope. Then when Dhiraj, a dangerous batsman, had a bail dislodged by the
finest of grazes, causing some confusion about what had actually happened, there
was a real possibility of snatching an unlikely victory. However, a possible runout was missed, a sharp chance dropped and
even from the last ball of the match, the keeper, sure that the ball was hitting
the wicket, let 4 byes through.
A
well-contested match which could easily have gone the other way saw good
performances by George (55) and Westwood (4-31), but a bigger score was needed
off one or two other batsmen to set a challenging target.
