Lichfield Nomads v Greenflies

GREENFLIES PUT DOWN

When new opponents, Greenflies, arrived there was some trepidation in the Nomads camp as several were wearing Wolverhampton cricket club tracksuits. Their captain when tossing up confessed there were some 3rd/4th team league players but said they were more a batting than a bowling team and once again this season the opposition only had 10 players. Captain Moss chose to bat and opened with Jones and Gardner. Although the bowling seemed slow and innocuous from the side lines, the openers had difficulty getting it away and the run-rate went along at only just over 3 per over. However the opening bowlers only took one wicket which gave us a good base to accelerate especially off Jose. Rolfe chipped in with a solid 25 and Moss played himself in and achieved his half century. Gardner began to find his touch and achieved his best score of the season, 72, before being caught behind. Then Brannigan put the icing on the cake with a rapid fire 24 including 2 sixes and 2 fours in the last over off M.Ali (who for some reason does not appear in the batting line-up).

A very solid batting performance with all the batsmen contributing and 2 half centuries with a 101 stand between Gardner and Moss.

After having been warned about the batting prowess of the opposisiton, it was pleasing that Brannigan and Moss bowled really well. Although more costly,Hoddy Hughes and Cartwight contained the Greenflies for the next 20 overs. However Greenflies were on par or slightly in front of Nomads until the 35th over. However 4 wickets had fallen and the late order batting struggled against the 2nd spell of Moss and could not emulate Nomads late scoring spree even with Jose still batting (84no). The tactics of allowing the single when Jose was on strike saw the last 2 wickets fall to suicidal attempts at 2nd runs to give Nomads victory by 25 runs.

Nomads played really well against a good side. The batting was very solid with a late flurry to get over 200. The fielding was good with 5 excellent catches, 2 run outs and 2 attempted run outs which were very close to being out and the bowling good , particularly Brannigan and Moss.
