Guests at Dunstall Hall
Arriving for our first visit to the splendid surroundings of Dunstall CC, we could not help but noticing
that the average age of the opposition was at least 30 years less than the
average age of the Nomads, even with the inclusion of Scott, Cole and George N.
The opposition were asked to bowl first and after 4 overs no runs had been
scored off the bat, with the ball whistling past Gardner’s nose and Stanley’s
waist, and Stanley’s wicket had fallen. In his first over Willis had conceded
5 wides and 1 no ball, but after changing
to bowling around the wicket , his next 2 overs were maidens. Dunstall and
promised to give all their players a bowl but unfortunately they could all bowl
quite well and it was only after bowlers 4,5 and 6 came on that we started to
score some runs. Rolfe and Gardner had hung in, but Rolfe was bowled after doing
the hard work and a lapse of
judgement by George resulted in Gardner being run out. Scott came and went
without realising he had been there and Cole lasted only a little longer.
Brannigan, subduing his aggression,
and Pinfield, rolling back the years,
produced another stand to get the score towards respectability.
Unfortunately Brannigan was bowled around his legs and Pinfield chipped up a
simple catch. Blackburn, Hoddy and Forster tried to use up the overs but
unfortunately we could not even do this.
Although the opposition attack was good, we should have scored more runs ,
no-one getting the big score. A splendid tea was provided with masses of cake to
weigh us down for our bowling and fielding.
A late inclusion of Brannigan and Cole had strengthened our meagre bowling
attack.
An attempted second run to our best fielder, George, gave us an early run-out
but then the 2 batsmen accumulated runs until Hoddy claimed a wicket. Brannigan
had bowled well and Cole, who replaced him, also bowled aggressively and claimed
another wicket. Soon after tea with Dunstall in sight of their target, George
who appears to be regaining his bowling rhythm, gained a fairly generous lbw,
then followed 2 more wickets and Dunstall were 6 down with 7 runs required.
Another wicket fell but Dunstall got over the line with 12 overs and 3 wickets to spare.
Possibly with another 30 or 40 runs Nomads might have been in with a chance in
this match
