Lichfield Nomads Cricket Club : Match Reports 2015 |
|
In a rearranged fixture against new opponents, a delayed start occurred when
some of them struggled to find the ground. Nomads opted to bat in light rain and
Stanley got off to a brisk start with 3 fours off 8 balls faced. Gardner should
have been run out when he slipped trying to recover his ground after setting off
for a single but the keeper failed to gather the ball. However the introduction
of Tariq, to replace Abbass who had bowled 6 wides in his only over, saw Stanley
trapped lbw. Rolfe came in, but never settled and played down the wrong line
against the innocuous Hoffman, Then Brannigan came in and he and Gardner played
spendidly albeit Brannigan chipped one up off a leading edge and Gardner gave a
couple of tough catches which were dropped. After drinks Brannigan was not as
fluent and was bowled when earlier he had looked set for a century. Westwood
scored a brisk 15; Ball was run out after he tried to send Gardner back;
Pinfield was closely run out by a direct hit; Hughes scored his first runs of
the season and Blackburn was out for 1. At which point umpire Westwood called
close of the innings forgetting Greaves was still to come in.
Nomads best batting display of the season saw a score of 256. However the late
start, slow overrate and overcast day suggested gloomy conditions towards the
end of Coftonians innings. This was to have a significant impact on the game.
Khalid and Surplice got off to a flying start due partly to some sloppy fielding
with over 43 off 5 overs. However things tightened up
and the
run ratewas cut back to 5 per over with
Hughes claiming 2 wickets in 2 balls. Brannigan and Westwood came on, Westwood
also claiming 2 wickets in 2 balls , the 2nd cutting back in from
outside the off-stump to take out the middle peg. However things were getting
gloomy and Hushain was cracking the ball lustily. It was difficult for the
fielders to see the ball coming and possibly some catching chances were not seen
in time. Part-time bowlers Blackburn and Ball came on with about 100 needed off
10 overs. Gardner almost took a wonderful catch on the boundary but with poor
light and a wet ball, the ball spilled over the boundary for 6. The last couple
of overs saw the unusual field placement of 5 men at long off to cover Hushain’s
favourite shot but the ball still evaded them. Eventually the winning run was
scored in the last over.
An exciting match, but the poor light should have brought the players off for a
draw some 45 minutes before the end for safety reasons.
