Whittington v Lichfield Nomads

Nomads sign off with last gasp defeat

Another gripping match brought the 2015 season to a close. Whittington won by four wickets with two balls to spare.

Confusion over the start time meant that the Nomads arrived at 12:30 and the opposition arrived at 13:30 for a 2pm start. The game was reduced to 35 overs and Lichfield Nomads batted first.

The Nomads got off to a stuttering start with Shami taking two wickets in two balls to remove Jones and Rolfe. Gardner was well caught off Bunch and the Nomads were in trouble at 19 for 3. Moss and Heslington steadied the ship and began to put together a solid partnership. The run rate increased as the partnership grew. Moss passed fifty as Whittington shared the bowling around. The final few overs were very productive and Heslington was finally bowled for a hard earned fifty in the last over. The partnership of 158 being a club record for the fourth wicket. Moss finished unbeaten on 93 and Brannigan was 2 not out.

Whittington’s response was immediately positive. Hammond and Coles batted confidently and built a strong platform. Drinks brought the usual flurry of wickets. Heslington removed the openers. Hoddy grabbed a wicket and Brannigan returned wicketless but with an excellent run out off his own bowling. Fearon bowled Hooper but this brought the dangerous Shami to the crease who set about finishing the job. Whilst he was at the crease the asking rate always looked possible. The Nomads cause was not helped by the dimming late and the inability of the fielders wide on the boundary not being able to see the ball careering towards them.
It was left to the injured Forster to bravely bowl the last over with Whittington needing 11 to win. Forster’s shoulder was shot and he was unable to get the rhythm he needed. He did well to get the new batsman on strike but a sequence of wides left the hosts needing one run from two balls. The inevitable wide gave Whittington the win.

Result: Whittington beat Lichfield Nomads by 4 wickets.
