A soggy day at Bugbrooke
Result: Bugbrooke beat Lichfield Nomads by 52
runs.
After considerable rain in the last month, Nomads hardly expected to play, so
were surprised there was no early call (it later appeared that ‘brooke had
called the ex-fixtures secretary at 11:30, after we had left Lichfield at
11:15).
Chairman Hughes was slightly late arriving with Hutton (due to a ‘pheasant’) and
only took to the field in the third over. Nomads had to wait a further four
overs for the appearance of Hutton who had a pressing engagement with the
Bugbrooke toilet!!
Nomads opening bowlers, Heslington and Moss started frugally, though with no
luck, and the score had mounted to no more than 31 off the first 15 or so overs.
However first change Hughes along with Moss snapped up the openers and Hughes
took another courtesy of a good catch by Jones, leaving ‘brooke on 34 for 3 with
getting on for half the overs gone. Unfortunately this brought in Coleman, who
was dropped three times before he had reached 10, and who then proceeded to
blast Nomads’ bowling to all corners, by-passing the lush outfield and soggy
ground. Eventually Greaves tempted Coleman into one too many hoicks and he was
well taken, though not without controversy, on the boundary, by Moss. However
the irreparable damage had been done. At this point the batsmen went back into
their shells and pushed for quick singles with the occasional lustier blow.
Various counts estimated that Nomads had spilled between 7 and 11 catches, not
all of them difficult by any means.
Much like the Bugbrooke innings, Nomads got off to a slow, though steady start.
The bowling was of a fuller length and might give Nomads’ bowlers food for
thought, in future, so there were few opportunities for big hitting until
Gardner slammed a straight 6. Stanley fell cheaply and Hutton struggled with his
timing and was quickly followed back to the pavilion by Jones. Moss began to
show the way but soon Gardner had gone for a creditable 26. Moss and Rolfe upped
the tempo and perhaps Nomads were in with a chance until Moss split his bat and
found Hutton’s much lighter wand difficult to come to terms with before the
dubious action of Letts’ first ball came off the inside edge, disturbing the
woodwork. From here on in Nomads were inevitably second best as ‘brooke’s slow
bowlers tied them down.
