Nomads Cling on to Chances at Abbots Bromley

Although cloudy and damp, the pitch played well and the rain kept off. Nomads batted first and Gardner and Stanley made a steady start. Gardner was caught trying to push things along, then Heslington was caught off what was close to a full-toss  no-ball. Raschid in particular was keeping things tight but Westwood was able to capitalise on the introduction of somewhat kindlier bowling. Stanley was hobbling due to knee problems and could not make his ground for a quick run. However having fulfilled his task of anchorman, Stanley’s loss was Nomad’s gain when Brannigan came in and the scoring rate shot up. Westwood was caught on the boundary, but Hutton played some elegant strokes despite being hit on the head by a throw in. On the last ball of the  penultimate over Pickering came in. Then in the last over a wicket fell on the 3rd ball and Rolfe came in to score 4 in 3 balls so unfortunately Pickering did not face a ball.

A total of 182 was better than expected  and the game looked set to be competitive.

The first 3 bowlers Brannigan, Heslington and Hutton kept things tight for the first quarter of the match and took a couple of wickets but it was the introduction of Cartwright that really put Nomads into the game. His accurate, skiddy style brought 3 wickets including the opener on 33 and Raschid whom we were later told had been a Sussex county quick bowler. Captain (Fantastic) Rolfe was switching his bowlers well and brought on Hoddy who took 2 wickets and then Hughes who polished off the final 3 wickets to bring a resounding victory for Nomads against a very capable looking team.

The match was noteworthy for 7 catches taken and none dropped, for 5 bowlers taking wickets and the fact that Hughes did not get a single vote for MVP despite getting 3 wickets for 0 runs conceded. Perhaps not having our bowling figures to hand in the pub afterwards might explain this, but it was essentially a team performance
