Nomads march on against Duke of York

An entertaining contest saw Lichfield Nomads outclass the Duke of York in a dominant performance at Kings Bromley Cricket Club.

Nomads batted first on a cool, cloudy spring evening. Gardner and Fearon were the attacking opening batsmen and they were positive from the off. They got off to the best of starts aided by a sprinkling of wides and an overthrow for 5 runs.

Fearon clubbed some lusty fours and Gardner pinged a couple of sixes against the new fence separating the housing estate under construction. The pair had added 88 in double quick time when Fearon tried to pull a short delivery and got the faintest of edges that the keeper just managed to cling on to.
Gardner continued the good work with Brannigan. He hit a superb straight six to bring up his half century, before retiring on 66 to give someone else a go. Either that or he was completely shattered. [Ed: It turned out he had a serious heart complaint and was admitted to hospital a few days later]

Brannigan and George built a vital partnership as the Nomads kept up the pressure. Brannigan was particularly bullish and hit  a couple of 6’s. The Nomads posted an imposing 211 for 2, more than they usually get from 40 overs.

Hutton and Harrison opened the bowling and the Duke of York’s response was electric. They knew they couldn’t hang around and had every intention of keeping up with the rate.

Once the opening partnership was broken, the gradual loss of wickets blighted the hosts response. There were two wickets for Harrison and Fearon and one for Hutton. The required run rate slowly crept up and the mammoth total proved too much in the end. Greaves bowled the final over with little alarm and the Nomads celebrated an impressive performance and rare win in the short form of the game.

Pedants corner. It was agreed that no balls/wides would count as 2 runs but no extra ball.
