Nomads Defeat New Opponents
After the cancellation of the president’s XI match, Nomads took on new opponents
Peopleton CC . The game was played in the small village of Peopleton near
Worcester. Our opponents, a young team in their 20s, started with only 7 as 2
arrived late and 2 had dropped out the day before. However we loaned them a
couple of fielders through the match. Rolfe won the toss again and batted.
Heslington and Stanley made a steady start, but just as Heslington was starting
to open up he groped for a wide ball and edged it to fly slip, much to his
disgust. Jones struck a number of fours but then was caught, one of 7 catches in
the innings, bringing Westwood in. He was out, missing a high full toss, to even
greater disgust than displayed by Heslington. As the bowler, Deeprose, J was a
slow bowler the ball was deemed not to be a no-ball although probably above
waist height. Deeprose J was causing much trouble and was likened to Torture
(Greaves) and God (Hoddy). Brannigan is in a batting lull at present and was out
for 8, however Hughes continued his good form of 2 weeks ago and struck a rapid
29. Stanley had been acting as anchor man but was eventually out in over 28 for
22 runs. Rolfe struck a few but Pickering’s average continues to fall being out
for 2. Cartwright scored 8 off 7 balls and Hoddy saw out the last 3 balls for 0.
A reasonable target, not as many as we had hoped for but more than we expected
after 30 overs. The fact that the opposition only had 9 men surely would come to
our aid.
Westwood and Heslington, annoyed over their dismissals, opened. Heslington was
unlucky having a fairly simple catch dropped but Cartwright took a good catch in
the covers, the first of his three, off Westwood who went on to take another
couple. Cartwright took over from Heslington and soon had a good caught and
bowled and Hoddy replaced a tiring Westwood to grab a couple of wickets. The
batsmen looked stylish but lacked patience selecting the wrong balls to go for.
Brannigan replaced Cartwright and took the last wicket . Hughes had replaced
Hoddy and found young Deeprose having a hit-out and he conceded 14.
An enjoyable fixture in a lovely village with a nice pub after. Perfect English
cricket. The opposition could well give us a good game with a full complement
and we will try to retain the fixture although their team is struggling for
players.
