Another Injury Blow at Aldridge

Nomads travelled over to Aldridge to face Walsall Health with the threat of thunderstorms to come. Rolfe  unusually lost the toss and Walsall AHA elected to bat. A loose over by Brannigan saw the Elf off to a flying start and Brannigan pulled up in his third over with back problems which saw him out for the rest of the match – a significant loss. The bowlers gradually reined in the scoring and Westwood and Vale, in particular were economical. Our cause was not helped by dropped catches, mostly from Stephens; a fairly straightforward drop by Hoddy and more difficult ones to Pickering and Hutton. Hoddy came on late and managed a couple of wickets and at one point keeping Walsall Health under 160 seemed possible, however some costly overs later on allowed them to reach 183, a handy total against only 10 batsmen.

Fearon and Stanley opened against some tidy bowling. Fearon was surprised being bowled behind his legs for 1. Westwood again started confidently but chipped a return catch to extra cover. Hopes were on Hutton in his rich vein of form but he succumbed to a lbw, the ball hitting his toe before striking the bat. However Liam Taylor came in and really went for his shots against some friendlier bowling and was the main contributor to a 101 stand with Stanley. Vale continued the attacking policy, but with an unlikely victory a possibility- 24 in 5 overs, first Taylor and then Vale were out. With due respect to the incoming batsmen, they were never likely to be able to adapt quickly enough to get the runs – Brannigan coming in may have given us more hope- and Rolfe, Forster and Pickering were quickly dispatched.

In the end a good contest v old rivals Walsall Health. Losing Brannigan did not help our cause, and Taylor was a well deserved MVP.
