Scores: Greenflies CC 193 for 6, Lichfield Nomads CC 168 for 8.
Result: Greenflies won by 25 runs

More injury woes beset the Nomads

The start was delayed as the pitch had not been prepared. Captain Rolfe won the toss and elected to field, being influenced by the amount of grass on the pitch. However, in addition to marking the creases, the groundsman took off some of the grass. Greenflies made steady progress reaching 84-1 at the drinks break. Even at 30 overs, the score was only 129-3, with Hoddy adding two more clean bowled to his already impressive tally for the season. Ali injected some momentum into the innings with some meaty blows. However, he was caught by Forster, with almost nonchalant ease, on the long-on boundary for a rapid 37. The final total of 193 seemed to be competitive in normal circumstances. Unfortunately, Moss dislocated a finger whilst keeping wicket and batted down the order, in some discomfort. Liam Taylor damaged his shoulder whilst fielding and was unable to bat. It can be reported that he has excellent handwriting as the scorebook is a model of clarity.

Nomads’ hopes were raised when an erratic first over went for 15, all in extras. Only 1 run was scored off the next 3 overs, for the loss of Lloyd Taylor and Heslington, both for 0. Stanley and Hutton put on 50 for the third wicket. Stanley’s first two scoring shots were boundaries glanced to leg, thus proving that practice does pay off. Rolfe swiftly followed Hutton, for the third 0 of the innings. To be fair, he had been told that he was facing a leg spinner. He was bowled by googly that turned a long way.

Cartwright interspersed singles with boundaries to record the highest score off the bat (33*). He was supported by Forster until an ambitious run saw Forster just short of his ground. Moss found that his damaged finger handicapped his batting (as it was to do with his guitar playing). The innings subsided to 168, a deficit of 25. Extras made a bid for the MVP award contributing 64 to the total.

This was another case of ‘if only’. The injuries clearly had a major impact on the team’s chances.
