218 for 8, Lichfield Nomads CC 73 for 5 rain stopped play. Only rain can save the Nomads!
The Nomads have some good days. The Nomads have some not so good days. It is
fair to say that this wasn’t one of the better days. The sight of a strip barely
distinguishable from any of the others on the square prompted Captain Rolfe to
insert the opposition. The strip was also on the extreme edge, making one
boundary very short.
Moss and Heslington opened the bowling. The few bad balls were punished. Some
ambitious, aerial shots also eluded the fielders. After 11 overs, the score had
reached 55. The first wicket fell soon afterwards. Westwood and Hutton put a
brake on the scoring, helped by a sharp catch from ‘Django’ Moss (at
considerable cost to his already damaged, guitar picking hand). By drinks, the
score had reached 76.
The opener Mo (also referred to as Uncle) continued to punish anything short,
making maximum use of the short boundary. 83 runs came in the next 10 overs.
Brannigan struggled for consistency. Westwood’s second spell was markedly less
economic than his first. Even the mighty Hoddy dropped short and was punished.
However, after a 97 run partnership for the fourth wicket, Hoddy struck with a
trademark delivery: they miss and he hits. Only 21 runs were conceded in the
last 5 overs as 4 wickets fell. Mo holed out at deep mid-off for a
well-constructed 107. The Deputy Mayor’s consort took a wicket in his only over.
The Hutton /Rolfe combination accounted for two wickets. 218 looked to be a
challenging total.
A light drizzle set in during the tea interval. Jones and Stanley raced away to
a score of 4 in the first 8 overs, starting with three consecutive maidens. The
bowlers found serious amounts of lift. Stanley was hit just under the collarbone
– which takes some doing. Eventually Jones holed out off the bowling of R Singh,
having played and missed more often than during his previous knock of 62.
Westwood followed in a similar manner. Hutton was deceived by a slightly slower
delivery. Stanley and Moss were also caught of the bowling of R Singh. Without
ever appearing to be the stand out bowler, he ended with the stand out figures
of 5-31.
37-5 at the end of the 19th over meant that the asking rate was
approaching 9 an over. 15 came from the 20th over so hope remained.
Rain forced the players from the field once. On resumption Brannigan continued
with a series of boundaries, hitting 33 off 25 balls. Heslington was more
measured in his approach. The drizzle returned making conditions increasingly
slippery. Concerns for Heslington’s inner abductor muscles and conscious that
Brannigan was returning from a back problem led to abandonment of the game after
26 overs.
