“Biffa” Brannigan gains 1st Nomads Win at Risley
At
the start of the week with only 3 players declaring themselves available, this
match looked like another we would have to concede. However with some players
sending in availabilities late and hard work by the Captain Rolfe persuading
players to play, we raised 11 with the help of one guest from Sunseekers.
Situated behind Treetops hospice, the ground is not well signposted, but it is a
very nice ground with long boundaries and surrounding trees – the only negative
being the road noise from the nearby M1 and/or A52.
Capt. Rolfe won the toss and elected to bat. The opposition were 50/50
youngsters and older players. The youngsters opened the bowling and Gardner and
Stanley found the variable line and length difficult to adapt to. Gardner
started to find his rhythm when the change bowlers appeared hitting one
magnificent straight 6. At the half way mark Gardner was bowled and Weir rattled
a few quick runs before being replaced by our guest player, Jackson, who looked
confident before being caught off what could have been a no-ball (above waist
height). Stanley’s dismissal had brought in Brannigan who lived up to his
nickname of Biffa plundering quick runs especially off the hapless Hubbard.
Hutton only lasted a few balls, but Rolfe proved adept at giving the strike to
Brannigan whilst also scoring runs himself, one of which was his 1000th
for Nomads. Taylor helped with a few more to produce a respectable total of 220.
Risley opened with their older players facing Brannigan and Taylor who kept
things quiet, Brannigan taking a wicket when Forster caught a trademark catch
off a lofted drive at long-off. Unfortunately Taylor dislocated a finger trying
to catch a hard drive off his own bowling. He did not return to the field and
this reduced an already depleted bowling attack. Ten overs per bowler had
already been agreed on account of this. Hutton replaced Taylor, but bowling off
a short run due to injuries. He also sustained an injury when trying to stop a
hard drive and had to leave the field. He did come back and bowled off a
slightly longer run achieving good pace and rhythm. Buckthorpe was going well
concentrating on leg side shots. At the half way interval, Risley had just about
the same score Nomads had reached but had lost 3 more wickets. Gardner produced
a trademark stumping off Hoddy to dismiss Harper, who looked dangerous, and the
very next ball deceived Hubbard with his flight. The hat-trick was denied but
then he bowled Buckthorpe on 89. With 7 overs to go Risley still were up with
the Nomads score at the same stage, but Risley’s
last 7 overs had gone for 70 runs and with the experienced Harper left
with only the youngsters, they never looked likely to achieve a similar rate.
Indeed Nomads went on to win comfortably by 55 runs.
This was certainly an enjoyable fixture not only for being Nomad’s 1st
victory of the season. The opposition played in a good spirit providing a team
which was a mixture of youth and experience. A fixture well worth trying to keep
for next season.
