Cheers to Cheadle

After Abbotts Bromley pulled out in midweek with a shortage of players, an appeal to all our contacts resulted in a link to Cheadle CC who were looking for a fixture after a cancellation. We turned up at an attractive ground with a strong team. However when told there were a lot of runs in the pitch as their 2nd XI openers had amassed 406 in 40overs (Mills 262no, Cadman 133no), our hearts sank, but fortunately they were not playing.

As the opposition took the field it was observed that the average Nomads age was probably 3 to 4 times that of the opposition. Nomads batted with Gardner and Stanley opening and progressed slowly against some accurate bowling. Gardner was out trying to force the pace and Moss after a cautious start pushed things along. Stanley was bowled and Moss out caught shortly after. Brannigan did not have quite the authority of his last 2 innings and was out for 9 but George had a cameo innings containing some elegant strokes to score a quick 25. Terry, Jones and Rolfe score a handful  of runs to give a final total of 142-6.

A slow start put pressure on the incoming batsmen to chase the runs and a total of 142 was likely to prove too small unless we could dismiss the opposition. However the conciliation was that an excellent tea was provided, including the option of rice pudding or ice cream for dessert.

As expected the young lads started quickly plundering runs off Moss and Heslington. Rolfe was forced to resort to the wiles of Hoddy and Cartwright who proved successful in slowing things down and also started taking wickets. After Hoddy’s 2nd wicket , the teams had to leave the field for 20 minutes due to a shower. This seemed to cause Cartwright to lose his rhythm and he was replaced by Brannigan and Hoddy by Moss. However there were too few runs to play with and Cheadle reached the total with 15 overs to spare.

This was an entertaining and winnable fixture at an excellent venue with an excellent tea at only £3 per head. Unfortunately Cheadle play so much League cricket that it is unlikely that we will be able to get a match with them next season.
