Result: Draycott & Hanbury tied with Lichfield Nomads Nomads versus Draycott & Hanbury ends in a tie
After Benaud (1960) and Border (1986), the
name of Rolfe can be added to the list of captains that have tied a match. On a
strip that was barely distinguishable from the rest of the square, the Nomads
struggled for runs. D&H used eight bowlers exhibiting a great variety of ages,
styles and speeds. Passing 90 with only three wickets down gave hope for a
substantial score. However the Nomads failed to push on, as four wickets fell
for only 18. The ten men failed to bat out the overs. 132 did not look to be
enough. As Mr. Boycott is prone to say (regularly), you don’t know what a good
score is on a particular strip until both sides have used it.
An excellent tea provided the opportunity to
regroup and focus on the task in hand. The opening overs were tight. Runs and
wickets were both hard to come by. Wickets were always likely to be the key for
the Nomads. Westwood took a few deliveries to find his rhythm but then struck
twice in quick succession. All of the batsmen found scoring difficult unless the
ball was short and wide. Dropped catches have long been a Nomads problem.
Stanley put two down. Jones and Cartwright clung on. Wickets fell regularly as
all of the bowlers played their part. With the score at 115-8, hopes were
rising. It fell to Moss to bowl the last over with one wicket required. A
somewhat controversial call of wide made the scores level. Thus fired up, he put
extra effort into the ‘extra ball’ and trimmed the bails.
