Bit End Jinx Strikes Again

In the absence of Capt Rolfe, Capt Moss took over and elected to bowl. After a quiet start by Coftonians, the openers decided to hit out and  Westwood after going for some 15 runs in his 3rd over after 2 maidens was replaced by Brannigan who suffered even more although he did see the back of one opener when he top edged one delivery into his face and had to retire. Moss, though comparatively economical was replaced by Heslington. Entering another stage in his career by coming off a short run, Heslington bowled really well, utilising a bit of bounce in the pitch, to go for fewer than 2 per over which was exceptional compared with the rest of the attack. Hoddy replaced Brannigan and had some success taking 2 wickets. However at this stage Layaquat was hitting sixes for fun, but Harrison deservedly took his wicket albeit at a high cost. Even Cartwright could not work his magic and Coftonians reached 240 for 4 in their 40 overs with 5 of their players scoring 30 or more.

Nomads had a struggle on their hands and would need a significant innings by at least one of their batsmen to have any chance of victory.

Terry and Gardner opened with the former soon being bowled playing down the wrong line. Unfortunately, Westwood, Brannigan and Moss all sent catches to a fielder even though the opposition had only 8 player now plus one guest fielder. The question was could Stanley score quick runs to confound the opposition – unfortunately not, although he had a good knock for 21 and was unlucky to be run out with a direct hit through his legs as he was trying to protect his wicket. Heslington and Cartwright also had decent knocks to give Nomads score some respectability, but a total of 155 was all that could be achieved.

A resounding defeat for Nomads was only the second 40 over match in which we have been outplayed with the opposition better in all departments.
