Nomads Lose Their Grip Against Walsall Health

On a damp pitch after much over-night rain, Nomads were asked to bowl after losing the toss, which we would also have done on winning the toss. Walsall Health had a strong side out hoping to revenge their defeat earlier in the season. Heslington and Hutton kept a firm grip on the game restricting the scoring. Then Fearon replaced Heslington and continued in the same theme, collecting an lbw and unlucky not to get another shortly after, the umpire reluctant to give two in such a short space of time. With only 60 on the board at tea and then only 105 after 30 overs, Nomads seemed to have a firm grip on the game. However only 3 wickets had fallen and the dangerous pair of Chuck and Fell started to attack the bowling. Perhaps we kept attacking fields too long and should have worked to cut out the boundaries rather than trying to save singles, but 8 per over off the last 10 overs gave Walsall the edge in the game.

With a score some 40 runs greater than seemed possible earlier in the match, Nomads had a tough task on a tricky pitch.

The openers were tied down, especially from the Pavilion End, and the runs barely kept up with the overs. Gardner was out trying to force things. George looked capable of pushing things along but was too ambitious in trying to take a second run and was run out. Heslington could not get going and was in for 11 overs only scoring 2 runs. Then Fearon, Hutton and Rolfe perished facing the impossible task of chasing an ever increasing run-rate. Terry had taken advantage of any loose ball but was eventually run out. Brannigan hit out briefly and Cartwright upped his average to over 50 for the season with 12no but Nomads could only reach 84 losing by over 100.

Nomads’ loss could be attributed to giving away too many runs late in the opposition innings and not keeping the score moving in their innings; over half the overs from the Pavilion End were maidens. Solving these problems is another matter, however.
