Nomads fall
over the Line against D&H
Nomads lost the toss against a young Draycott & Hanbury side and were sent in to
bowl on a damp pitch. The openers rode their luck against the incisive opening
attack of Heslington and Hutton. The ball spent a lot of time in the air but
evaded the fielders. At one point they seemed to be toying with our
wicket-keeper edging the ball just beyond his reach several times. Brannigan
replaced Hutton and was unlucky not to have a wicket when everyone besides the
batsman and umpire heard a knick to the keeper. Harrison came on taking 3 and
Hoddy took 2.Then the return of the ‘torturer’ Greaves after a long lay-off due
to civic duties showed he had lost nothing of his accuracy taking one wicket; he
should possibly have had 2 but keeper Rolfe, seemingly impatient to get the
ball, took ball and wickets before the ball had the chance to reach the stumps.
A low
score of 98 seemed to be a comfortable target, one Nomad player stating he would
‘pack it in if we don’t win this’
However an early Stanley run-out, not heeding the old adage of never run on a
misfield, and very sharp catch to dismiss Gardner and 2 regulation catches to
dismiss Terry and Scott saw Nomads struggling at 18-4 off 12 overs. Heslington
dug in staying at the crease whilst accumulating 13 but Brannigan favoured
attack and was soon bowled for 4. Hutton came in and curbed his attacking
instinct to add runs. Rolfe also kept the score ticking over and with only 21 to
get off the last 10 overs and 4 wickets left, victory seemed in our grasp.
However a tight spell of bowling from Holmes and Holmes (P&A) conceding only 5
runs in 5 overs with the loss of another wicket put the result in the balance
again. Harrison came in and looked to have been dismissed but the square leg
umpire was not sure that the ball had carried and the fielder was not certain
and sportingly Harrison was recalled. However he was bowled requiring 2 for
victory and Hoddy went in. The scores were tied with an above waist height
no-ball and then Hutton struck the winning run off the 1st ball of
the last over.
The
unusual weather conditions of simultaneous bright sunshine and steady rain,
producing magnificent rainbows, helped neither side in Nomads innings and all
praise to steady batting by numbers 5-9 seeing us over the line, just.
