Result: Greenflies beat Lichfield Nomads by 3 wkts.
Brannigan’s Heroic Innings Cannot Save Nomads
Nomads batted first but struggled to score against the opening bowlers in some
helpful bowling conditions. With the ball swinging a total of 8 wickets were out
bowled. Heslington and Gardner were resolute and a stand of 35 offered some
encouragement. However 2 wickets in one over, including Moss’s 1st
ball dismissal, plunged Nomads back into the mire. Brannigan, batting 7,
realising he might be running out of partners attacked the bowling and managed a
face-saving 59 before being bowled with 2 overs remaining. Even using 9 bowlers,
Greenflies took all 10 Nomads wickets, however Brannigan’s 59 gave us some hopes
of saving the match.
Moss and Heslington bowled spendidly, both capturing 2 wickets in the first 10
overs, thus providing encouragement for Nomad’s cause. However Touacan and Steve
Barrett pushed the score along and when Touacan retired at 59, Greenflies looked
to have victory in their grasp. Hoddy was disappointed when 3 catches were
dropped and 2 good lbw appeals turned down off his bowling but finally got a C&B
to dismiss Barrett. A couple more wickets were taken but Greenflies just got
over the finishing line, leaving the question whether Touacan would have been
allowed back to resume his innings unanswered.
Nomads again did not score as many as they needed, taking the pressure off the
opposition
