 Sportsman v Lichfield Nomads

Result: Sportsman beat Lichfield Nomads by 131 runs.

Nomads Routed by Sportsman

The sign of another cricket season nearing its end was indicated by the first end-of-season early start. The match was slightly delayed as some Nomads were held up by road-works and others had trouble finding the ground as parking was on-road and entry by an inconspicuous gate. Sportsman elected to bat and started rapidly, helped by a small ground and fast outfield. Chances were given but none went to hand. The guest player from Sunseekers, Lee, took the 1st wicket and then Nomads had a bit of luck when Hughes clung on to a hard drive off Cartwight’s bowling who then claimed another next ball with his speciality “grubber”. However no more success occurred for another 120 runs when 2 wickets were again taken in rapid succession, but the opposition kept attacking the bowling to achieve a total of 272-6.

Even on the West Sports Ground this looked a good total by our new opponents, and a good start was required by Nomads

We started off reasonably quickly with new opener N George looking good but he was out pushing too hard with a defensive shot and chipped an easy catch to the bowler. Seven of the wickets were catches, some excellent ones, including a one handed over the head catch and some easy and Nomads subsided to 109-9. Only pride, and D Cartwright’s ever-increasing batting average was at stake now, and he and Hoddy saw out the 40 overs to earn the losing draw and boost Cartwright’s average for the season to 79.

Although we might have done better with a bit of luck and  perhaps the addition of Moss and Brannigan to name just two, the opposition was a little too strong for us although they played the game as their name suggests.
