Nomads Recover after Disastrous Start

After Sutton pulled out with insufficient players, Capt. Rolfe found a fixture not too far from his home territory at Springvale. The forecast suggested we would be very lucky to finish a full match, and there was debate about whether to begin at 1pm. However the opposition seemed keen and Nomads elected to bat. Nomads got off to an awful start; Terry was bowled round his legs, Moss caught off an edge pushing forward defensively and Heslington chipping an easy catch to short cover. Three down for 9 off 6 overs and all to the slow left-arm bowler York. Gardner and Stanley steadied the ship but the main aim was survival, not scoring runs. No further wicket fell until the 23rd over when Stanley was a bit slow setting off for a run and was run out. Fearon felt it was time to put some runs on, scoring 20 before falling to a catch. Hutton was really annoyed to get a gonad after chasing a wide ball and being caught. Then, Rolfe, Hoddy and Harrison combined to obtain the 2 goals of batting out the overs and scoring more than 100.

The failure of 4 of our main batsmen made our cause difficult. The Springvale bowling was not as lethal as we made it appear and York was flattered by his 6 wickets. Another disappointment was that our leading batsman, Cartwright, did not add to his already impressive average.

Moss and Heslington did their usual job of keeping things quiet. However with 7 bowlers and a low total Capt Rolfe gave everyone only a brief spell. Cartwright worked his usual magic (if he played more, it seems likely that he would be leading batsman and bowler) and Hutton was unlucky not to get a wicket when Hoddy missed a simple catch at mid-off. Hoddy and Fearon also got wickets and with 4 down, there was always a slim chance of success. However with the 1st team opening batsman now in, the last few runs were knocked off, Springvale winning in the 24th over, with the promised rain appearing in bucketfuls at 7pm.

Whilst Springvale may have had something in reserve, we did ourselves no favours, and would, I am sure, do a lot better in a rematch.
