Result: Lichfield Nomads beat Darley Abbey by 81
runs. Nomads sign off with a win
What
turned out to be the last match of the season was played against 1st
time opponents, Darley Abbey, who, as promised, provided a team with a mix of
youth and experience. Nomads were put in to bat on a drying pitch and started
carefully but then reached and maintained a run-rate of 3 per over. The bowling
looked friendly from the pavilion and there were comments that we should be
scoring at a greater rate, however, when wickets fell the new batsmen who
attempted to push things along soon fell victim to the bowling and in the end
the patience of Terry, Heslington and Cartwright saw Nomads reach a respectable
total of 156-7. During the innings Terry was given run out but due to the
technology of the “DazCam”, a review suggested that the keeper might have
dislodged the bails before receiving the ball which then ran on to the wicket.
However the dismissal stood.
On a
large ground with an outfield further dampened by a shower during tea, which was
a splendid affair, Nomads’ score looked reasonable, however there were fears
that the young opposition players might yet strike the ball lustily.
The
opening batsman, Usman, scored the majority of the early runs, chancing his arm
against some good bowling and Darley were scoring at a similar rate to the early
overs to the Nomads. Then Cartwright came on and, the pitch suiting his style,
claimed 3 wickets and aided by Heslington with 2 wickets from the other end the
match was effectively over as a contest. The match was ended by Pickering who
claimed the final wicket of the season with the 2nd ball of his 1st
over. Everyone of the 7 Nomads bowlers claimed at least 1 wicket.
Another season over too soon. A possible match next Sunday cancelled as no pitch
could be found to play on.
