On a scorching day Nomads were asked to field and the 2 Walsall openers achieved their usual good scores. Chuck retired on 100 continuing a rich vein of form, and Gorton achieved 64 before being given lbw to Cartwright, having become the Elfs' Competition leading run maker. Hoddy finally managed to take a catch off Hutton's bowling having dropped one in the deep off Cartwright and Elf reached a formidable 235-2.
Nothing particularly went for the Nomads with catches evading the fielders and the bat being beaten a number of times to no avail. The field was lightning fast and the Nomads suffered towards the end in the hot conditions with only 10 men. Westwood had introduced new man Turnbull, from deepest Derbyshire, and he looked better than his bowling figures appear to show.
Nomads went in to bat with some hope of reaching the required total. However we soon slipped behind the run-rate particularly between overs 15 to 20 when Elf had piled on 50 runs. No-one could dominate the bowling. Some concern was raised when Terry walked off with the spectators thinking he might have been hit on the head earlier, however he had succumbed to the heat, and was soon feeling much better after a cool drink and a rest in the shade. Nomads position was not made any easier when Westwood was run-out. Fearon enlivened the end of the inning with a rapid fire 46no but Nomads finished well short of the required total. Our usual tough match against the Elf, our best hope of victory is usually when the openers do not turn up or we can get them out quickly.
