Springhill v Lichfield Nomads C.C.

Nomads Romp to Victory in First Win of the Season

On a gloriously hot day (20 degrees hotter than last week), Nomads travelled to new opponents Springhill. Winning the toss for the first time this season, Hutton sent the opposition in to field to give our boys cooler temperatures after tea. Gardner opened with Scott, an occasional Nomads player, and both set off at a brisk pace. The fast outfield and shortish boundaries enabled the openers to score in fours saving their energy for the later stages. Having reached the 10 overs at nearly 5 per over, Gardner, who has looked to be playing with more confidence this season, was bowled at 31. Weir was in briefly, avoiding the gonad, and then giving way to Moss. Moss had had some net practice during the week and looked in better touch than in the opening match. He and Scott set about the bowling, only being restricted by Sabz who bowled at a good pace off a short run, and achieved an impressive partnership of 130 before Scott was bowled for 69, after earlier being dropped by loanee fielder Cartwright. Moss and Brannigan really went for quick runs; the unfortunate Jamil having 29 scored off his last over. With Moss only wanting a couple of runs off the last over, the spectators decided to let him know, which, he told us later, that he would have preferred not to have known, and was bowled for 98 off the last ball, with Nomads achieving an impressive target of 246-4.
Despite the excellent total, Nomads had some worries about the batting abilities of the opposition, and with a late start and slow bowling rate anticipated a late finish.
Taylor and Hutton calmed the fears with their usual tight bowling, both bowlers deserve more wickets than they seem to get. None of the batsmen could score quickly and Cartwright, Hoddy and then Harrison maintained the pressure, Springhill being all out for 73. Cartwright pipped Moss for MVP with 4 wickets and 3 excellent catches, which must have made the opposition wonder how he could have failed to take a simple chance when fielding for them. Young Zayn was invited back to bat as the opposition had only 10 men and was soon out, letting the Nomads have a much needed drink in the club bar. A very enjoyable fixture which hopefully will be repeated next year.
