Lichfield Nomads C.C. v The Sportsman C.C.

Nomads lose high scoring sporting encounter

Nomads were put in to bowl by the opposition who started briskly against Fearon and Hutton on a lightning fast outfield. Hutton in particular was beating the outside of the bat. Unfortunately a decision to strengthen the slip cordon by adding Nick George seemed to destroy his rhythm and that over cost him 23 runs. Cartwright was introduced to try to tighten things up but unfortunately he was not as accurate as usual and the openers profited with a run-rate of 7 per over. Hoddy had a good spell and slowed things down somewhat and the new man Davis also bowled well and was unlucky to concede the runs he did. The opener Ahmed retired on 102 and Hoddy claimed his partner for 61, however the incoming batsmen were no slouches and kept things going. Coming on for his customary couple of overs at the end Adam Hughes gained another wicket giving him a very impressive strike rate.
A total of 279-4 looked a well-nigh impossible target to get even though at one point it looked as if it might have been over 300.
Gardner started eagerly with a four off the first ball and he and Terry scored at a good rate albeit below the asking rate. Terry and then Fearon gave Gardner good support before both being out in the twenties. Gardner just achieved his first century for a couple of seasons before then being bowled George and Adam Hughes scored freely without ever really being able to get within touching distance of the target rate although the opposition had to resort to putting most of their fielders on the boundary to stop the fours. In the end Nomads achieved a very creditable total of 252 which must be one of the Nomad's highest losing totals.
Again the Nomad's stuck to their task and with a bit more 'run of the ball' might have been in with a shout of taking victory off a very good team.
