Trentside C.C. v Lichfield Nomads C.C.

Comfortable win for Trentside

Nomads travelled into Burton to enjoy the splendid facilities of Trentside CC. We batted and made a decent start at 3 per over after 10 overs for the loss of Pete Gardner who was bowled by an innocuous looking bowler. Somewhat disheartened Peter, was somewhat uplifted when he was later told that this bowler had taken around 1800 wickets in his long career with Trentside. However after this start for no obvious reason things slowed down. The bowling was good but not spectacular abut we only managed a further 19 runs off the next 10 overs.whilst losing 2 more wickets. Batsmen were making starts but not continuing to make big scores. Paul Fearon came in with 4 down and seeing 2 more batsmen disappear quickly, curbed his usual attacking instincts and stayed around, only striking out with 5 overs to go thereby accumulating a face-saving 37no.
A score of 112 looked well short of par but Nomads went out on the field determined to try their best. Davis and Hutton bowled very aggressively at the start of the innings but at the speed they were bowling any contact with the bat saw the ball racing to the boundary so the first 8 overs were very lively. The third wicket fell in the 11th over with the score on 41, but then Wood and O'Donnell started a partnership. O'Donnell smashed the ball for four given half a chance and Wood pushed his score along without taking undue risks. Hoddy and Cartwright bowled with no success and Fearon was brought on and managed 2 balls before the winning run was struck. Nomads only consolation was that we lasted until after drinks.
Trentside are a very welcoming club providing one of the best teas we have (includes chips and ice-cream as well as the more usual fare). Also a unique feature is that a jug of beer is brought into the dressing room directly after the match.
This is a tough fixture with the Trentside team being a mix of older players with plenty of experience, now struggling to find a place in the league teams, not because of lack of ability but preference being given to the young players. Then there are a sprinkling of youngsters plus at least one player who can score runs quickly. Against this opposition we needed at least 180 on the board and fell well short.
