After a cancellation by Sutton-on-the-Hill, Nomads managed to get a fixture at Walsall against Midpoint CC.
On a damp day, Nomads elected to field. This fixture saw the welcome return of Dan Lee who opened the bowling with Aneek Mahmood. Lee immediately got into his metronomic bowling and completed his 8 overs for a mere 27 runs but was unlucky not to claim a wicket . Mahmood was dropping the ball short at times and the openers collected runs on the square leg boundary. Midpoint had reached 97 off 20 overs and it looked as if Nomads would be facing another +200 score. However Tom Davis, formerly of Walsall Health was making his debut for us and came on to bowl. He bowled an excellent spell, even more economical than Lee and also claimed 3 wickets.’Daz’ Cartwright replaced Davis and bowled a tidy spell claiming 2 for 18. Jim Cogzell, not having regained his form of last season, was replaced by John Hoddy, who claimed one good batsmen and then was bowling against the juniors and quickly ended the innings.
The opposition only had 10 batsmen and a score of 170 was a good result.
The opposition opened with good quality bowlers and Matt Barker, another debut for the season, was undone by an excellent ball. ‘Fuzz’ Weir, given instructions to take his time perhaps overdid this and whilst Rana Ghosal was playing well at the other end, the required run-rate soon mounted. A tea-time score of 45 meant a run-rate of over 6 per over. Ghosal, Weir and Rich Bastable were all out in short order and the free hitting Aneek Mahmood raised hopes. With Jim Cogzell and then Dan Lee aiding him, Nomads hopes were raised but his departure dashed them again and whilst Dave Rolfe produced a brief flourish late on, it was all too little, too late.
If batsmen had remained at the end , Nomads would have still had a fighting chance of achieving victory. We, again, let ourselves down with dropped chances although they were all difficult and again, we did not have the rub of the green but Nomads are still looking for their first significant victory.. However the game was played in good spirits and Midpoint may turn out to be future opposition.
