Quorn C.C. v Lichfield Nomads C.C.

Quorn make mince meat of Dad's Army

For our first visit to the Leicestershire village of Quorn, the Nomads put out one of the oldest teams ever, with an average age of 50.

Captain Rolfe (Mainwaring was unavailable) won the toss and elected to bowl first. This ploy might have worked had four catches, of varying degrees of difficulty, not been put down off the openers.

Emboldened by an opening partnership of 93, our hosts went on the attack and after 35 overs had reached 235-3. “Don’t panic” The breakthrough by Lee Westwood saw the final seven wickets fall for twenty runs as Westie (5-32) and Jimmy Cogzell (2-52) ran through both the middle order and the tail.

A solid start was essential but this was not to be, although a second wicket partnership of 40 between Pete Gardner and Sam Bryars steadied the ship. Sadly wickets continued to fall as several batters got themselves in, and then promptly got themselves out again. “We’re doomed” 44 runs were added by Dave Rolfe and Lee Westwood for the sixth wicket, but ultimately we came up well short.

Unsurprisingly, Westie was voted MVP. “Your name will go on the list” Thanks to our hosts for being so welcoming, we hope to return next year.
