Tutbury C.C. v Lichfield Nomads C.C.

Victory at Tutbury Castle

Nomads finally started their season after the first 5 Matches had been called off due to the very wet weather. It was a beautiful day for cricket at a splendid venue in the shadow of Tutbury Castle. It was our first visit to Tutbury and they turned out a team ranging form an Aussie pro to a first time cricketer.
Tutbury elected to bat and Nomads took to the field with Hutton and Hoddy lagging behind, the former with a hangover and the latter with a trouser malfunction. Lee and Mahmood opened the bowling and the opening batters rattled along at a brisk pace, the Aussie in particular striking a number of straight sixes. Then Mahmood claimed the first wicket striking the batsman on the foot in front of the stumps, although he thought it had hit his bat. After a tiring 6 overs each for the openers, Turnbull and Hutton entered the fray. They were soon amongst the wickets, Hutton in particular bowling at his best. The pro retired to give other people a bat and Cogzell and Hoddy came on. Hoddy needed one wicket to reach 500 wickets for Nomads but even though he hit the stumps with one ball , the bail failed to dislodge and with no wickets to his name the champagne was put on ice. Cogzell was on for a hat trick but did not manage to get his 3rd. With the pro returning and one wicket to get, Hutton was brought back on to obtain his 4th wicket, to restrict Tutbury to 168.

Ghosal having kept wicket had sufficient energy to open the batting along with Pete Gardner- another wicket-keeper and opening bat in his day. The two openers proceded at the required pace with little trouble. The only notable event being Gardner’s six hit all along the ground when the fielder hit the helmet behind the wicket keeper with his throw. Gardner was eventullay out to an excellent slip catch attempting to guide the ball down to third man. Brannigan came in but was soon out to another good catch resulting in the first gonad of the season. Hutton came in and added some excellent batting to his excellent bowling spell. Ghosal was out on 49 to yet another good catch and soon so was Scurlock. The captain, Mahmood, came in and with Hutton comfortably saw Nomads over the line.
Hutton was a well-deserved man of the match with bowling figures of 4 for 10 and 48no batting.

A strong Nomads side obtained our first win in our first game of the season. It was a splendid day for cricket against new opponents who played the game in a great spirit. A fixture to be preserved. [Disclaimer: Any offence caused by this article is unintentional, any praise is well deserved]
