Hilton C.C. v Lichfield Nomads C.C.

Nomads Brought Down to Earth by Rampant Hilton

A change to cool weather had some Nomads retrieving sweaters from the back of the wardrobe. Nomads lost the toss and Hilton elected to bat. Some early wayward bowling saw Hilton taking full advantage with 66 runs coming off the first 5 overs. The captain was forced to try new bowlers and Hoddy and Gibson came on and managed to stem the tide each also claiming 2 wickets. Young, 1st team captain, in particular was scoring well and we were happy to see him retire after the 25th over. Turnbull and Jordan had come on to bowl but the teams soon had to come off for rain. Tea was taken and play restarted. Perhaps the break had affected Nomads as 2 simple catches were dropped off consecutive balls by Turnbull, however he persevered and went on to claim 2 wickets. Cartwright and Cogzell finished off each picking up a wicket.
Nomads did not help themselves when Hilton got off to a flying start, with several dropped catches, not all of which were easy but at one point the score looked as though it would be more formidable.
Nomads opened with Gardner and Loxley but Gardner soon succumbed to tight bowling from Georgie Harrison for 2 and one of many lbws in the match. Loxley was also out to lbw but was soon in again as a runner for R Bastable who had pulled a calf during the match. Despite this he achieved another 50 before being caught by a good catch in the deep. Turnbull was out to another lbw facing his first ball. Cogzell mads a fighting 21 but then Nomads lost their final wicket in the 33rd over.
Nomads never really recovered from a disastrous start and would have needed 2 or 3 big innings to have had a chance of achieving the target which they could not achieve. Nevertheless still a very good start to the season.
