Stoneygate C.C. v Lichfield Nomads C.C.

Nomads suffer in the heat

Nomads travelled into Leicestershire to face Stoneygate. Both sides were happy to have Stoneygate open the batting.
Cogzell opened aggressively claiming a wicket in his first over and Ian Hughes after a shaky opening also began to bowl well. Olivia Bryars replaced Cogzell and although struggling with her length, the batsmen also struggled to get her away and she might have taken a wicket except that the ball was adjudged to have bounced a number of times before reaching the batsman. Hughes completed his spell and was replaced by Cartwright who claimed a wicket when a sharp chance was taken by Hoddy at gulley. Hoddy replaced Olivia and bowled one of the Gutteridges who was looking dangerous, unfortunately the other Gutteridge was accumulating runs before eventually retiring on 100. Rylea Hughes, starting his cricketing career, claimed his 1st Nomad’s wicket in a competitive match again caught by Hoddy in the gully albeit a catch juggled several times before being claimed Cogzell came back for his last 2 overs getting another wicket curtesy of an effortless catch by Gardner in the slips.
A final score of 214, mainly due to an unbeaten 100 from M Gutteridge, was perhaps some 30 runs more than it should have been due to Nomads wilting in the field.
Nomads had not got a deep batting line up in this match which was not helped by losing Loxley to a one-handed slip catch early on. However Bastable aided by Gardner, until he got bogged down by accurate bowling kept things on target. However with the loss of Bastable and Gardner we were through to the tail, and none of the last 3 batters scored more than 3.However Nomads lasted the 40 overs and lost by fewer than 100.
Considering the team we had out this was a respectable performance played in good spirit on a lovely summers day.
