Lichfield Nomads C.C. v Old Moseley Fitmen C.C.

Nomads Narrowly Avoid Record Breaking Loss

Nomads played one of their few home games at Walsall against Moseley Fitmen on a hot Sunday afternoon. Nomads fielded a weakish team against strong rivals Moseley and spirits were not raised when Fitmen were heard discussing the strength of their batting lineup. We looked all set for a long, hot, tiring afternoon. So it proved with Nomads sweltering in the field. Cogzell and Singh bowled well but the openers capitalised on anything slightly loose and the runs quickly accumulated at 6 per over. The openers both gave very few chances and both retired after reaching 100. Hoddy could not work any magic finding the heat energy-sapping and quit after 5 overs. Basi making a welcome return after a long layoff took over bowling duties and was probably our best bowler managing to take 2 wickets. Nick Bryars and Dave Pickering had some overs with Dave managing to obtain a stumping before Singh and Cogzell completed their over allotment. Moseley had shown no mercy and reached the daunting total of 353.
Nomads object was to try reach a total which would give some respectability to proceedings.
Gardner opened partnered by Weir. Although Fitmen did not appear to put their front-line bowlers on, the ones they did use were still able to take wickets. Yousif was apparently dismissed by Lockyer but the bowler was wearing a cap which fell off as he delivered the ball and so the batsman was rightly recalled. Only Gardner and Cogzell reached double figures although Singh was unlucky to fall to a really sharp caught and bowled by Nicholls. Nomads did pass 100 and batted to the 36th over so respectability was achieved.
With a much under-strength side against a team that usually triumphs over our best 11, Nomads put on a spirited display. The defeat was just 3 short of the all-time record loss by 250 against Lullington. However Nomads persevered in uncomfortable conditions and all the players should be proud of their efforts.
