Fearon Five-for helps Nomads win at Risley
It was mutually agreed that Nomads batted first at Risley with Gardner and Rolfe continuing their opening partnership. A solid start saw Nomads accumulate 76 against Naik, Saunders and Middleton. However the introduction of Moseley, a level above the other bowlers, saw Rolfe quickly fall to a ball admired by even the umpire.Gardner was also bowled by Moseley but Bastable, continuing his great form and Holmes stretched the score to 156 before another wiicket fell, that of Holmes on 37. Bastable was then soon bowled by a ball he thought had bounced twice , thereby being a no-ball, but the square leg umpire disagreed.A rapid 20 by O’Brien pushed the score to a very respectable 211-6.
Looking at the Risley team, it seemed likely to be one of those matches where if we could get 5 or 6 seasoned batsmen out , we would be through to a tail of youngsters.
Lee and Hughes opened the bowling. As usual Lee was unlucky not to claim a wicket when a fairly simple chance was dropped off his bowling. Hughes was getting some swing and managed to find a top edge with the batsman spooning a chance to gully. The openers where replaced by Clenton and O’Brien who both struggled with line and length and were severly dealt with , especially by opposition captain, Scurfield. Fearon was brought on and showed the benefits of maintaining line and length taking Scurfield with his very first ball, by a match winning catch taken low down by Lee. Fearon also claimed the other main batsman, Moseley and ran through the tail, aided by Jordan and Hoddy, to claim 5 wickets for 10 runs.
Another good win for Nomads against a proper Sunday side. The game being played in an excellent spirit.
