Lichfield Nomads v Wall

Scores:  Wall 257 for 8; Nomads 259 for 3
Result:  Lichfield Nomads won by 7 wickets.

A last minute change of pitch saw the game take place on the artificial pitch on the main square at Barton. Wall batted first  and started briskly. Fearon claimed the first two wickets with an in cutter and an lbw.  The bowlers temporarily put the reigns on the scoring with Branningan coming round the wicket. The middle order of Wall however batted confidently, attacked the bowling and pushed up the run rate, helped by a hard dry outfield. Kev Collins added quick runs down the order. The bowlers had to work hard throughout. Moss’s efforts were rewarded with 3 wickets – all bowled. At tea the Wall score of 257 looked daunting but as someone remarked, Chris Collins scored a hundred in the same fixture last year…………

The Wall opening bowling was tight. Gardner found Caddick difficult to get away. It was up to Collins to set the agenda with bold drives and pulls. A direct hit from the outfield ran Gardner out, and the left arm spin of Foulds claimed Fearon. Collins in the meantime was batting well and took the score to 125 of the first 20 overs.  Brannigan supported Collins in a partnership of 101 with good shot selection. He was eventually out to an excellent catch from bowler Collins K. But the bowlers had no answer to the relentless onslaught from Chris Collins. His stylish innings included a range of flowing drives, pulls, wristy glances and a superb 6 to square leg.  He deservedly carried his bat with a record score for the Nomads of 194 not out, beating Rob Ings’s 172 made in 1995. Congratulations go to Chris who, with 74.9% of the Nomads runs, ensured an unlikely victory for the Nomads ( and the highest team score batting second).
