Lichfield Nomads C.C. v The Sportsman C.C.

Nomads return to winning ways with comprehensive victory

Nomads turned up at Kings Bromley, with not their strongest team, and so the outcome of the match against what we know is a strong team was not anticipated. A moment of crisis before the start of the match was averted when Hoddy, having forgotten his cricket trousers, borrowed a pair which although tight covered his embarrassment. We elected to bat and opened with Moss partnering Gardner due to the injury of Terry. The opening bowlers made use of the worn, cracked pitch to keep the batsmen on the defensive resulting in extras setting the pace and ending up, not for the first time as leading scorer. A steady start was made but wickets fell regularly. Everyone contributed with no gonads recorded and a final partnership by Rolfe and Hutton pushed the score up to 149.

The score recorded did not look impressive knowing the batting strength of Sportsmen; however we hoped that the pitch would give our bowlers some help. Hutton and Moss gave the openers a lot of trouble, and the first 2 scoring shots were streaky fours edged through the slips. Inroads were made and particularly important was the wicket of Ahmed who attacked the bowling from the start. It can be seen that getting him out for 14 was very important when the visitor's scorebook showed he had scored 125 off 65 balls the previous week. With our opening bowlers tiring Hoddy and Cartwright were introduced and Hoddy, in particular, had a golden spell, Having developed a ball which leaves the right-hander, the batsmen were bamboozled and the 'Dolly Parton' stats of 9 for 5 finished off the opposition before the drinks break.

It is to be hoped that an unexpectedly convincing victory will kick start our season again
