Nomads 139 for 7 from 35 overs (Gardner 57, Fellows 44, Harper 1-14) Sunseekers 143 for 6 from 34.4 overs (Duffill 31, Stewart 26no, Walters 25no, Greaves 3-22, Fearon 2-28). The Nomads were asked to bat first and almost immediately the rain began to fall. This was one of several breaks for rain and the match was reduced to 35 overs from 40 overs. There were 2 notable partnerships. Fellows and Gardner put on 63 and Gardner and Fearon put on 40 before Gardner was caught off a no ball only to be run out as he ambled back to his crease. The silly season continued as McGuinness then ran out Fearon next ball and was later run out himself. Skipper Hoddy then ran himself out in a desperate attempt for runs making 4 run outs in all and the score collapsed from 123 for 2 to 139 for 7 in the last 4.3 overs. The lack of sitescreens was tolerable but the lack of scoreboard and tea was bad form. The conditions were pretty poor for bowling and Rowland (seeking his 300th victim) and Higginson opened the bowling. Heavy persistant rain then interrupted Sunseekers (sic) response. A tight spell from Heslington (1 run from 5 overs) and wickets from Greaves and Fearon (after he came round the wicket to avoid the mud bath) put the brakes on Sunseekers but the asking rate was still gettable whilst they had wickets in hand. Cartwright and Hoddy had the responsibility of bowling at the end and Sunseekers eventually needed 22 off 3 overs. Some clean hitting and timely sixes from Stewart and Walters left only 3 required off the last over. The first three deliveries were dot balls but Walters hit the winning runs with a big 6 over mid wicket. The Nomads retired to the pub to discuss how yet another close contest had resulted in defeat. |
