Nomads Annual Dinner Reminder
(Saturday 1st November 2008)... and Ian's
wedding plans
Nomads,
There are 3 very important social events coming soon...
1) Annual Dinner - Sat 1st Nov @ George Hotel, Lichfield. We'll be meeting
in The Queens Head from 7pm onwards and then making our way across to the
George by 8pm.
Please let Pete Blackburn know if you're coming to our star studded awards
evening ASAP, please!!!
NB. Please bring your trophies from last year so they can be awarded to
the new recipients on the evening. Cheers!
2) My Stag Do - Sheffield - Sat 29th Nov. As most of you are aware I'm
finally making an honest woman of Heidi... Therefore a Stag Do is
essential. I'd love it for as many Nomads to come as possible. We've
(Snapper & I - in his role as Social Secretary) booked some rooms in the
centre of Sheffield for the Saturday evening. The plan will be to get the
train up there, maybe via the Brunswick in Derby for a swift 'half' before
continuing up to Sheffield. We'll then come down on the Sunday. If you
want me to book your train ticket (ie make it cheaper than buying on the
day) will you please let me know by 1st Nov? Cheers.
3) Our Wedding - Sat 27th Dec. Since I'm having a Stag Do, it seems only
fair to have an actual wedding to go with it... Heidi and I would love all
Nomads and their Partners to come to the Reception at The George Hotel,
Lichfield for around 7pm. Please let us know again by 1st Nov please If
you'd like to come so we can arrange numbers for catering etc.
Those coming further than Lichfield can take advantage of the deal for a
room we've done with The George of £62/room B&B (normally over £80). Again
just let us know on the 1st Nov, please.
Cheers,
Ian.

Nomads lose to Youthful Great Barr.
Another well fought innings
from Gardner, out trying to win the game, when Nomads were 177 for 3 with 6 overs
left. Opening stand of 54 with Stanley who batted well, then a quick, time
wise, 9 from Dan before a stand of 60 with Fuzz twinkling with 20. Gards
scored heavily behind the wicket with delicate glances. Willis fell for a
first ball duck and DF was going well until unnecessarily run out by
Capt. Pinfield who stayed to the end, accompanied by Neil and his brother. A
good fight by the Nomads against a much younger side!

Nomads survive scare to defeat Parkers.
An impressive fightback from Wheeler almost
secured an unlikely victory for WT Parker. Nomads batted first and set a
competitive 201 for 7, from their 40 overs, mainly thanks to 87 from
Gardner. It looked like it would be a comfortable win for the Nomads as
wickets fell regularly and the rate was up to 8 an over. Wheeler had other
ideas and a barrage of powerful pulls and drives saw Parkers get
uncomfortably close to the winning line. The
experienced Fearon and Heslington bowled out the final overs and kept the
pressure on the batsmen.
In the penultimate over, facing Fearon, he played on to his stumps via an
inside edge and pads and the chance of victory was gone. Heslington bowled
out the final over without drama to seal a 12 run victory. The Nomads
breathed a sigh of relief after notching up their third win of the 2008
season. Click here for
more details.

Nomads hold nerve for Shugborough victory
Lichfield Nomads beat Shugborough by three runs in a closely fought
contest at a damp Shugborough Hall. The Nomads posted 169 for 5, Fearon top
scored with 80. Heslington tweaked a muscle to leave the Nomads bowling a
bit threadbare and the absence of Gardner gave Graeme Blackburn the
opportunity to make his debut as wicket keeper. Snapper Blackburn bowled
particularly well, taking 2 for 12. The hosts were well placed on 151 for 5
with 4 overs left. But Hughes (4-39) and Fearon (1-43) held their nerve to
deny the opposition.

Tribute to Phil Evans
As a tribute to former member Phil Evans who tragically died on 21st
November 2007, I include the details of a note I have received from Kev
Fisher.I had a letter from Judy Evans
yesterday informing me of Phil's untimely death. I'm sure that there are
several Nomads who will talk about Phil better than I can but if you put a
tribute on the website maybe you could extract something from the following
"eulogy" from me. If nothing else perhaps you could distribute it at a
Nomad's meeting for me.
"I don't think that Phil Evans' batting or bowling statistics appear in the
Archive section of the Nomads website (& apparently he didn't win a Gonad
award, which is a major surprise!). This is probably because he preferred
the beer & the banter in the Pavilion to any exertions on the pitch. As such
he epitomised the simple, joyful pleasures of those early Nomad years.
Phil should have his own entry in the Hall of Fame, not for cricketing
statistics but for his significant contribution to the Nomad fellowship.
Phil introduced me to the team - first as an opponent in my GKN Technology
days & then quickly as a member. I am very grateful that his friendship led
me into many happy years of association with the Club. Phil had an ironic
sense of humour (like many Welshmen) & his scorn for my "Boycott-style"
batting was often voiced from the boundary. He once said he enjoyed my
"patience" at the crease because it meant he could go & have a pee, get
another pint & share a few jokes with the barman confident in the knowledge
that he'd have missed nothing of significance in the meantime!
In spite of his illnesses over the last few years he never "retired hurt" &
he certainly "troubled the scorers" in the innings of his life when it came
to friendship & family. I'll miss him. Cheers Phil mate. "
Thanks Paul. See you at the 30th Anniversary maybe?! I did come up to
Lichfield at very short notice for this year's celebration but found a very
soggy pitch devoid of Nomads. I should have guessed you'd all be in the
bar!!

Notes from afar
Fixtures secretary Keith Stanley has just got back from India where he
saw the fifth one day international, here is a brief account of his trip:
"Nomad
by name: nomad by nature. It might be the off-season for cricket here, but
it is the peak time for cricket in India. Some might argue that it is
always the cricket season there. Impromptu games are much in evidence on
every spare strip of land at all times of the day. However the temperature
(mid 80's) and the humidity (low) make November and December an ideal time
to play and watch, at least for the Brits.
I went the the fifth, and as it happens, last One Day International at
Cuttack. It is a six and a half hour train journey south of Kolkata.I had
a reserved seat in an air conditioned compartment, so it was reasonably
comfortable.
The Barabati stadium holds over 30,000 people and it was full. Very full.
There were perhaps 50-100 England supporters present. Wearing my white
cricket hat, I do tend to stand out in a crowd of predominantly short
Indians. Consequently I was interviewed by one of the local TV channels
whilst queuing to get in. Once inside, the crowd cheered every move by an
Indian player - even during the warm up.
The game itself was noisy, vibrant, passionate and it was a sheer joy to
be present. The result was slightly disappointing from an England team
perspective, but the experience was unforgettable. There is constant
movement with people coming and going. Vendors come round selling chai
(sweet tea), snacks, water, fruit juice, biscuits etc in an endless
stream. By the end of the game it felt that we were sitting in a litter
bin, not that the idea of bins seems widely appreciated in India.
I answered frequent questions about where I was from. Dutifully I clapped
Indian 50's, but I stood to clap KP's ton. There was a great interaction
with the locals around me. I felt perfectly safe and would recommend the
experience to anyone. India is a mixture of order and chaos. A bit heavy
on the chaos perhaps, but everything happens eventually. You just learn to
go with the flow.
At the end of my trip, the taxi driver saw my 'Cricket Tour Company'
baggage tag. He convinced himself that I am a famous cricketer. He
insisted that I give him my autograph. I duly obliged. It is difficult to
write whilst on the move, so he has an illegible scrawl. It really made
his day. Perhaps the Lichfield Nomads are better known than I had thought!"
Keith Stanley
If any other Nomads want to post their
close season blogs then let me know.

Tribute to Ray Jennett
It is with great sadness that I have to post the news that Ray Jennett
has passed away. Ray was a Nomads stalwart and long serving President and
Chairman. He dearly loved the club and its members and his first interest
was always with the well-being and prosperity of the club and it's
traditions. Ray was often the 'glue' that helped bind the different groups
within the club together.
Although he had not played for a few years it is worth remembering that
even in his twilight years he would don the whites and give his all for
the team, to the best of his ability, especially on the Belgian Tours.
For the record, Ray took 30 wickets at an
average of under 18 and scored 76 runs. Ray played for the Nomads 141
times in total and was always happy to let others get the chance to bat
and bowl. On countless other occasions Ray would be there at the games,
helping in any way he could. Helping with the drinks, serving the teas,
manning the score book or donning the white coat to do his stint of
umpiring. As well as latterly providing match reports for the website,
running the MVP competition and organising the fantasy cricket
competition.
Ray we'll miss you.

forms were absent from last year’s notification. I have rectified this so
here are notes on all three.
a. If you wish to nominate a captain for next season please use the form
provided and make sure that the person you are nominating wishes to do the
task.
b. Any application for a position within the club requires the person to
cross the box against the post in question. The member’s application, if
unopposed, will be proposed and seconded. If more than one person applies
for any position, a democratic vote will take place.
c. Your vote for “Nomad of the year” is important. Our most treasured
trophy is decided by all members and you need to make sure that the
Chairman receives your nomination at any time before 8.00pm on the evening
of the Annual Dinner.
Our AGM is a wonderful opportunity to remind us of and review the previous

Nomads lose final match at Blythe Bridge
thanks to Heathcote century
The Nomads
lost their last match of the 2008 season at a sunny Blythe Bridge by 5
wickets. The Nomads squandered several chances to dismiss Heathcote, who took full
advantage and went on to record an unbeaten century. The highlights for the
Nomads were an important 80 partnership between Gardner(45) and Fearon(36)
and 22 from a bleary eyed Moss, who had travelled up from the Isle of Wight
overnight. Pete Blackburn picked up two late wickets to bring his season's
tally to 10. Click

Low total proves Nomads downfall
Nomads total of 148 looked well short of par and so it proved as Walsall

difference as Walsall AHA won comfortably.

Nomads lose to Church Eaton
An injury ravaged Nomad's team were struck
down again as Hussein went down with a serious achilles injury and the
Nomads slipped to a third straight defeat.
After a rapid start, the Nomads went from 97 for 1 to 187 all out off 36
overs. There were some useful knocks but no-one went on to get a really
big score. Church Eaton's middle order came to the rescue as they turned
round a sticky 62 for 4 to win by 6 wickets with more than 7 overs to
spare.

Nomads second best to impressive Etwall
A stronger than expected Etwall, including several first
teamers, were too good for the Nomads on the day. Injuries to Heslington
(Heel) and Fearon (Hamstring) also took their toll as the Nomads slumped to
their second worst defeat ever by 189 runs. The positives were 4 wickets for
skipper Hughes and some good catches by the fielders. All in all it's just
another rick at Etwall.
